3rd September 2008 The Olympics are fading fast, and London 2012 is just a glint in the future Gymnastics Gold Medalist's father's eye. But don't fret, we have plenty of things going on to keep you busy. Because we're here for you. First of all, we want to welcome the vanguard, the point-men (and point-women - we at Lush are equal opportunity alcoholics), the first into the fray, the tip of the spear, all the new students that have arrived in the past couple of weeks. Welcome to Beijing. I got a chance to catch up with the new crew from CET, PKU's BIAS program and some of the Brits starting up at Cap Norm last week, and I know my man Tai down at Bei Wai's neck-deep in IES freshmen. There're others out there too, but long story short, this semester is getting kicked off. All Lush and Pyro events have been rebooted; we've got Vegas Veteran Josh holding down Pub Quiz on Wednesdays at Lush as well as Beer Pong on Thursdays at Pyro, and solid rotation of acts on Fridays, and myself and Roberto "El Generalissimo" Lein catching rotten tomatoes at Open Mic every Sunday at Lush. They make good salsa. Speaking of salsa, Pyro's rocking brand new Buffalo Wings (with your choice of tasty sauces) and ice-cold Frozen Margaritas. "Evaluate" a large cup today, just 30rmb during Happy Hour. Look, it's not an ad. Well, actually it is, but come on down. Let's meet, do lunch. Or an Irish Car Bomb. The Lush Crew is ready. Are you? Coming Soon This Fall, Lush brings the madness once more with Lush Rush Week, the traditional start of the Wudaokou Spring Semester. And let’s face it; is there really any better way to welcome Beijing into your hearts than by introducing Qingdao beer into your liver? We think not. So unpack your crap, sign up for those inconveniently scheduled ‘classes’ that everyone seems to be carrying on about, and get your ass down to the Wudaokou crossroads for orientation, double time, because invariably, it’s going to get messy. About the Rush Lush Week Rush is a bi-annual event we’ve been doing for nearly 4 years running. It’s basically a big, crazy, loved up welcome to Wudaokou bash for all the new incoming students featuring our standard event line-up (plus a few surprises) but cranked up a notch. Crazy cheap drinks, great live madness, and lots and lots of giveaways. |

27th August 2008 And finally, the Olympics have come to an end. And I have to say, it truly was a lot more fun that I thought it was going to be. For starters, I've never watched that much sport before at one time, and secondly, being overseas definitely accentuates your level of patriotism. (And testosterone, but that's a post for another day). As much as I love my Sunburnt Country, I can't imagine ever going down the street draped in an Australian flag, unless by some outrageous coincidence I die a War Hero. And yet there I was, resplendent in my Quiksilver Aussie flag tank top and short shorts, draped in the Southern Cross. Good times. But shennanaigans aside I had a great time, and even went to see some events. I got to see the Aussies win two Golds and a Bronze at the Rowing final (and got a tan), saw the Aussie Women's Basketball team thrash the Czechs, and score of scores, managed to get my hands on front-row seats to the Brazil-Argentina Football Semi courtesy of my man Caspar. Awesome. Now if you're into this kind of thing, here is the final Medal Tally:
But if you're like me, and understand at a very deep level that the only way to judge an international sporting event is a Reordered Top 5 Per Capita Rating (and I know you do), then here is the updated and accurate Medal Tally:
Aussie. Aussie. Aussie. Oi. Oi. Oi. ChinaFAQs Update Pretty chunky update to the Wudaokou page of the ChinaFAQs section. Check it out. There will be test. It'll called 'Getting Home Drunk". Gold. Always Believe in your Soul. Okay, so YEN Gold was lots of fun. I don't want to rub it in if you weren't there but yes, freaking awesome. The whole night was awesome on fact, and it definitely felt good to get the Wu-Train rolling again. Literally in fact. After the wet, hot insanity of the Pyro Opening Celebration we couldn't get a cab, so 30 of us took the subway to Yen. I don't want to get anyone in trouble but pole dancing was involved. Way to Wu. |

9th August 2008 My God it's been a desolate couple of weeks but finally san "W" dianr Lush Beijing dianr com is back in action. After some Problems That Shall Not Be Named (not Voldemort, nerd) we have shifted hosts, at least for the meantime. Again, not really a computer expert or "geek" as I think they're more commonly known, but I think it has something to do with pointing the tubes in a different direction. Possibly Blu Tac is involved. Anyway we're currently being hosted by our friends at We Live in Beijing Dot Com; they're excellent hosts and we thank them for their hospitality. If you have a chance go check out their site, it's freaking awesome, like a virtual Beijing. Lush Events 2:
My God it's been a desolate couple of weeks, nursing my cold-turkey withdrawal to the Crack Cocaine of Event Planning, the Lush Event. But now the desolation is over with the return of Lush Events! That's right, we will be returning to your regularly scheduled broadcasts! That means Pub Quiz, Beer Pong, Live Music and Open Mic starting this Sunday! So come out and celebrate the return to fun this Sunday when we bringeth the thunder and the rain and hitteth you with our awesomeful drink specials. Oh yeah, that's right: Well, thank God it's not desolate anymore, for the Olympics have finally arrived! So for those of you still alive after the undoubtedly debaucherous Opening Ceremony Pre, Post and During parties that are sure to occur, it's time to watch some sports. And of course the best place to watch said sports is Pyro. With a huge projector screen, a brand new flat-screen and two ordinary, run-of-the-mill, insecure TVs, we're guaranteed to have the kind of TV you're used to watching. In addition, our satellite friends are broadcasting Olympic Events on 3-5 channels, meaning we'll have the game you want to see, even if China's not actually a participant! In particular, the Olympics will be officially kicked off with the US Dream Team VS China's One World One Dream Team (I've been waiting so long to make that joke) this Sunday at 10:15PM! So come down and check it out. And if there's a game you want to watch just let us know! If nothing's planned (or noone's watching) we'll switch it for you. |

Free tickets to the best costume! Monday 8pm, August 8 @ Pyro In other news... Thanks to everyone for supporting the Rocksistance last Sunday. It was a blast and we'll try to do it again sometime. And an extra special thanks to Tavey for hosting us in his house. Sorry it burned down. In unrelated news... Check out this sweet 3D view of Pyro. |

17th July 2008 Can I just say something? I hate the word 'fashionista'. It's a stupid word. So please stop calling me that. Just kidding, no one calls me that. In more truthful news however, the Pyro T-Shirt designs are in their final stages. I was just tossing up between neo-mod black and hot pink or an artfully distressed rock-retro print. God help me I AM a fashionista. Over on the right are two of my already discarded earlier drafts. If you get the first reference good for you, one pink star goes in your book (a short book, under 10 pages, glossy, lots of photos). If you don't, you can buy a clue at my favorite life-saving conversation-starting website. |

7th July 2008 My God. What a weekend. What crazy weather! Welcome to Summer in Beijing! Guess we all should have been listen to Saint Gore instead of playing Playstation in the back seat of our SVUs with the AC on. So, between torrential rain and oppressive heat, Lush and Pyro are bringing you some cool Summer Specials: Lush Specials 2pm to 4pm Every Day: 8pm to 10pm Every Night: Pyro Specials 11am to 4pm Every Day: 10pm to Midnight Every Night: Word Up Hey people, I just want to say I'm Australian (that's not an excuse) and I've been lucky enough to meet and hang with people from all over the world, from the US to the UK, Scandinavia to the Seychelles, Latvia to Laos. And I have to say, when you're a long way from your friends and family, it's great to be able to get together and have a good old time, maybe not exactly like it would be back home, but still great. Especially on those days when you most miss your friends and family. We're all here in Beijing together; some days it can be rough, but most of the time it's a gas. You guys are my friends and family, my brothers and sisters, my hot cousins and my creepy uncles. None of us will be here forever (though I'm getting close), but we're all here making the most of it. So for everybody out there, in and out of Beijing, I hope you had a Happy Fourth of July, regardless of where you're from. Cheers. |

30th June 2008 Hey, we don't discriminate! And we don't play favorites either. We'll take any excuse for a party, regardless of nationality, (but with due regard to that nation's penchant for mild alcoholism). St. Paddy's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, we've done it (yo mama) and drunk it. But that having been said, July 4 is definitely one of the more hallowed alco-holidays in our calendar. So come celebrate your newfound freedom of the underage-drinking law in style, at the one and only Lush, with:
Lots of live music and associated mayhem. Shock and awe, baby. This Friday Night, July 4 @ Lush EURO 2008 So the EURO Cup is finally over. Wow, it was a long sleepless road. Like the time I went to Fujian on a hard-seat ticket and a farmer's wife fell asleep on me while her chicken stole my iPod. Congratulations to Spain, European winners for the first time in 44 years. And condolences to Germany, not least because the Spanish certainly are among the louder of the football fans. The look of annoyance on the faces of the black and white clad Deutschland supporters upon hearing the "Ole" song for the 53rd time was absolutely priceless. Weekend Thanks for everyone who came out to help us celebrate winning the TBJ Awards we won. It was a crazy night and I got completely slaughtered on 5rmb Tequila shots. All 2 of them. What can I say? I'm Asian. But 5rmb? Cheap at twice the price. Cheap date with twice the rice. Big props to Tavey and Senor El Diablo-san for providing a night of spectacular entertainment. (Extra special cheese on toast thanks to TV for not wearing his PJs. He may not Roll on Shabbos, but he Rocks 24/7, dude). And cheers to for all the newbies that just rolled into town. They may not know what a TBJ is, but they sure as hell know how to party! Props to the new BLC Unit, the UI Olympic Volunteers at Qinghua, and the one girl I met from CIE. In Other News: Josh "Vegas" Lally will be out on an illicit visa run, duct taped to the chassis of a mianbao che, so I will be hosting Pub Quiz this week. I apologize in advance. It turns out that not only did we win 2 bests and 2 Outstandings at the TBJ Awards this year, but those magnificent bastards The Beijinger magazine have also given us an Editor's Choice nod for Pyro in the Best Student Hangout category. God I love those guys. So I'll see you round this week fo' sho'. On your marks? Get set? Hangout. |

17th June 2008 Everybody got your party hats on? Seats in the upright position? Well check this: Lush & Pyro kicked ass in The Beijinger Awards! That's right baby, we took home awards in every category we were nominated for, 4 in total, two wins and two outstandings. I swear to god we were walking back and forth from the floor to the stage all night long.
First of all I'd like to thank everybody that made this possible, the incredible team at Lush & Pyro, and of course our parent company the Sheinhardt Wig Company (Blue Panda), the awesome crew at The Beijinger, and most of all, the millions of fans that voted for us and supported and us and joined our Facebook group an- (Cue Music) Party time: Lush, Baby; Bar & Club Live music, cheap-ass drinks and giveaways at your very own award winning Good Value havin', Student Hangout. One kick-ass Independance Day Party. You've been warned. June 30 to July 13 Back in the 'Jing I'm back from a lovely two weeks in Thailand, and tanned like a Miami retiree. 1st June 2008 I'm very proud to say that Lush & Pyro and our parent company Blue Panda have jointly donated 10,000rmb to a Sichuan Relief fund. The money will be used for setting up schools in the quake-ravaged region. I don't know about you, but the thought of it just makes me feel good. So thanks to everyone out there who helped us raise the cash. Sports Mad I may not look like it, but I love me some sports. I may not know who's playing, or what any of the rules are (which feel in rugby at least is fully justified), but it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Hell, get around 100 drunk screaming fans in a room rooting for their team/player/league of choice and even curling can be fun. (No offense Canadians). So I'm pretty stoked to present not just one, but two awesome sporting events winging their way via satellite to our friendly shores: NBA Finals 2008 With LA and Boston reviving their storied rivalry. With Boston on a rollercoaster fairytale ride from draft pick misery to division champs and beyond. With Kobe-led Lakers 2.0, coming from three consecutive ring wins from 2000-02. WIth the Boston Big Three hitting their straps. Hell, I say Kobe's a lot more like Jordan than Magic, and Bird certainly had less bad luck on the floor than Pierce, but what a great series. Both teams will be hitting the hardwood to restore lost glory, and it will be huge. Oh, and go Boston. NBA Finals - Starting 8pm June 6th (One day delay due to time difference) EURO 2008 - LIVE! Football's biggest event outside of the World Cup is coming to Pyro! Set in altitude-y Austria/Switzerland and playing host to 16 of Europe's best teams. (Except for England of course). And best of all, it's live! If you're a football fan at all then you need no encouragement, but if you aren't, then there's no better way to learn than by watching the best. Switzerland VS Czech Rebublic - Midnight June 7th Portugal VS Turkey - 2:45am June 8th |

26th May 2008 Wow, big week for the birthdays. And what better way to celebrate a birthday than at the YEN 4th Anniversary. What a night. In a strange misjudged desire to inject a little more formality into the proceedings we decided to go in 80s attire. Great music, fantastic venue, LOTS of drinks, and then off to Dim Sum next door at 3 in the morning! Can't think of a better Friday night. Anyway, check out some pics on the right, and as usual, even more on the O2 Culture and Clubzone websites. Of course if you're feeling a little more adventurous you can always do what Tara Gillian (and her friends Ale Morones, Bruno Diaz, Edu Kim, Diego Sola, Diana Wong) did and throw your very own mad joint-birthday event like her Mini-Skirts Are Back party near Lin Da last Saturday! I wasn't able to make it, unfortunately (courtesy of the traditional YEN hangover), but I heard that the walls caved in and the roof caught on fire so well done Tara. And Sunday night at Open Mic was it's usual late-night Monday missing madness. It was Eduardo's farewell gathering, and as usual he brought the latin heat. Take it easy bro, and good luck Godfather. We'll miss you. Other birthday wishes go out to Michel, don of the Wu, and of course Jason "The Experience" Pipkin. On the one hand, you're another year older, but on the other, you'll never be as old as me. Peace. Footer! The Champions League Chelsea VS Man. Utd. final was absolutely insane. Pyro was packed to the brim and bursting at the seams, with people practically hanging from the rafters to get a good view of the game. The game itself wasn't exactly a nail biter, though there were a few notable exceptions. The relatively pacey first half saw both sides score, but was then followed by an hour and fifteen minutes of slow play, though heating up when Drogba got tossed for slapping. The penalty shoot-out though, was heart-stoppingly climactic, with a couple of unexpected misses from both sides! In the end though, Man U took the cup. Oh well, I'm a Liverpool fan. Anyway, now that the incredible Champions League is finally done, we can look ahead to the next big event. And they don't come bigger than this! EURO 2008, starting June 7th! Stay tuned... Burgers! That's right! 15rmb burgers at Lush, every afternoon from 2pm to 4pm! Original, Chicken and Teriyaki! Get one now! |

20th May 2008 Yeah, baby! Lush has been nominated once more for the coveted Best Student Hangout award in the That's Beijing Bar & Club Reader Awards! We've also been nominated for Best Food and Best Value for the first time, and Pyro is nominated for Best Happy Hour! So please, for love and/or Old Time's Sake please Vote Wudaokou and get us that pseudo-crystal hunk of validation and love-substitute for our mantle! Please please please vote! This is Da Ge Ge Rich asking... Don't forget, winning will be yet another excuse for a Blow Out Party. Represent the Wu! And may the Force be with you. You can vote here! Manchester Utd VS Chelsea It's finally arrived! Settling England's recently disputed claim to the Football Throne, the Barclay Premiership's 1 and 2 compete once again, but this time for European glory! Last time they met, Chelsea won 2-1 despite eventually losing out on the top spot to the Red Devils. So come along to Pyro to watch what will undoubtably be a climactic rematch live on the big screen, with full, very English commentary, this Wednesday night! 2:30am Wednesday Night (Thursday Morning), May 21 @ Pyro |

19th May 2008 So the night starts off as it always does with awesome live music at Lush with a slamming set by O-Reilly-San, guest Open Mic host, ably filling Jason's shoes while he was away. Then off to Pipa's amazing Huaqing Jiayuan rooftop pad for hopefully the first of many House parties! Thanks for the invite! Next time I'll bring my kiddie pool and we'll have a pool party! And if you're lucky enough to get an invite to the most VIP spot in the WU I'll see you there. That is, If I'm lucky enough to get another one. After that it was over to the Birthday Extravaganza of Heidi (D - WU). For those (very few) who don't know Heidi, she's currently on here second Tour of Duty in Beijing, and was a HUGE part of getting Pyro off the ground. So there we were at the hard to find (but awesome-ly so) Q Bar, happily slamming Pina Colada's until the wee hours. The night ended as usual at Lush with the sun coming up, trying to tamp down the booze with bacon and eggs. Great night. Open Mic was Crazy As Usual, with not only all the usual suspects present, and El Diablo himself in attendance after a long hiatus, but the triumphant return of the Jason Pipkin Experience featuring Kanene. And they're engaged! So congratulations to Jason & Kanene from us here at Lush. And lastly, not to be outdone, I proposed to my long-time girlfriend Inna! So thanks for everyone that was there. It was a great night and I've never drunk that much champagne in my life. |

15th May 2008 Yen turns four! And let me tell, them's the trouble years. So prepare to get raucous and indulge your inner rave child. From the insanity of the three infamous Great Wall parties to the sweet summer Yen Out, to the Midi Festivals (shame about this year, huh?), to Yen White, Black and last but certainly not least, the scandalous Yen Fetish Halloween events, it's been a wild ride. The event will be held at Star Live on the 3rd floor of Tango, nice and close to the Wu. And you know what? I like 798 but there's always somewhere to sit at Star Live. Tickets are a very reasonable 70rmb, and on sale at (where else?) your friendly neighbourhood Lush Wanna know what it's about? Check out the O2Culture website for some visual imagery. And by visual imagery I mean cute rave bunnies. Friday, May 23 @ Star Live (Tango) - Presale: 70RMB / Door: 100RMB |

14th May 2008 As most of you already know, a devastating earthquake struck the Sichuan region on Monday. In response, some of Lush's partners and previous collaborators are putting only what will probably be the first of many benefits in aid of victims. Featuring DJs and VJs from the SOS, Bai Cai, White Rabbit, O2 Culture, Syndicate, Propaganda Unit and Acupuncture, starting at 8pm and going non-stop until 5am. Entry is 50RMB with all proceeds going to Earthquake Relief. For more details you can check out the event page here on FaceBook. The DJ lineup in particular is absolutely insane, featuring and all-star dream team of Beijing's best underground electronic DJs. It looks like it'll be a great party for a great cause. 12th May 2008 Wow what a weekend. Despite the extremely average weather, Beijing put it's best and blew up. And thank god exams, golden weeks, happy endings, etc. are over. Now the Wudaokou Massive can get back to what it does the best: partying. Saw a lot of people out and about both on the Wudaokou crossroads and downtown; after live music night at Lush on Friday I headed down with some friends to Alfa to check out Lady Marmalade's long-running 80s Night and it was off the chain. For those of you who don't know, Her Ladyship actually started out at Lush's regular Mixed Up back in 2005. And Open Mic was insane! Big props to Jason and Amy with the violin and guitar ensemble. That's the most fun I've ever had slapping my thigh. Guest host O Reilly San brought a bag full of tunes (as usual) which had me scrambling to keep up. And Lush's star regular Tavey brought the house down with his rendition of Sean Kingston's 'Beautiful Girl'. Anyway, if you were there (and especially if you missed it!) make sure you're there this Sunday for the Triumphant Return of Jason "The Experience" Pipkin who's got some news to share, the Last Hurrah of Beida's CIEE program, and a little secret surprise courtesy of me. Update An earthquake has just hit the Sichuan region. Initial reports are indefinite but devastation appears anything but. On behalf of all the staff at Lush, Pyro and Blue Panda, I'd just like to say that our thoughts are with the survivors. |
