Categories - Fun with movie titles, Name the Year, “In-Between” Geography, Super Villains, Break up music.
Winners - In his final night in Beijing, Faraz and Tongzhimen rocked the competition to win the bottle of Jack, and give him a great way to end his pub quiz career in Beijing. Following them, we had a menage a trois of a tie for 2nd place, which led to the absolute necessity for a girl on girl drink-off. Crushing the competition and winning the pitcher, Kidneys Come and Go got to fill their glasses from their free pitcher of Adios MF, and in an awesome show of tie-i-tude, I felt it absolutely necessary to give both Pink on the Brink and Southbound Pachyderm a bucket of Tsingdaos, courtesy of the awesome display of drinking from their representative ladies.
Sample Question – (“In-Between” Geography) Name 1 of the 3 member nations of the UN that fall alphabetically in between Kenya and Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic)? Bonus: There’s a 4th nation that could fall in betwen Kenya and Laos, but its status is disputed, and so it is currently not officially an independent nation. What is the name of that nation, whose status is currently in dispute?
Last Week’s Answer – (August 25th Recap) Hyrule
Such a great night! Great energy, awesome people, and a night of challenging quiz and liver-abusing drinking. Basically, all the components that make Weds nights in Wudaokou so memorable. For those of you that came down to Pyro afterward, you were treated to some awesome DJ-ing by our resident musical expert Juan, and a bunch of you helped me and Rich trial half a dozen new shots so I can update the shot list in Pyro this week. Good times for sure! Nothing like some cheap drinks, tequila shots, and some free alcohol to get the booty shakin and the body movin. I can’t wait for Lush Rush! Stay tuned for more information regarding what will likely be one of your favorite experiences in Beijing, because Lush Rush is just that good!

Sample Question – (Communism) On July 14, 1956, Mao Zedong had the following to say about a certain country in the world. Which country was he referring to? “In appearance it is very powerful but in reality it is nothing to be afraid of; it is a paper tiger. Outwardly a tiger, it is made of paper, unable to withstand the wind and the rain. I believe “this country” is nothing but a paper tiger.”
Last Week’s Answer – (May 19th Recap) Pierre de Fermat, Sir Andrew John Wiles
Lots of new teams, new faces, and new energy in the room, which made for one hell of a good quiz. Hope to see you all back again next week and moreover, I hope some of you get up on stage for a guest round and show me what you’ve got! Oh, and next week, we gotta get more of you down to Pyro for some post- pub quiz dancing. Too much fun to be had on 5rmb tequila shots and cheap pitchers to be missed out on! Sample Question – (Puzzles) Which mathematician’s final theorem in 1637 stated that no three positive integers, a, b, and c, can satisfy the equation an + bn = cn, where n equals any integer with a value greater than 2 – a theorem that was left unproven for more than 350 years? Bonus: Who was the British mathematician who finally proved the theorem in 1995?
Last Week’s Answer – Sadie Frost
Leaderboard – Even with their third place position this week, Southbound Pachyderm had more than enough points to seal the win for the 10 week leaderboard. Tongzhimen knew Pink on the Brink were hot on their heels, so they brought their A-game and locked in second place, and Pink on the Brink sealed 3rd place with a confident point lead over Kidneys Come and Go to round out the top 4 positions. All in all, an excellent leaderboard showing for all teams involved, and it just goes to show that through perseverance and determination, anyone can top the standings! Stick around and keep your eyes on the prize. The next major leaderboard will be this fall, but we may do a small run for the Summer semester if everyone seems keen.
So 4 years of pub quizzes, 4 years of Thursday hangovers, 4 years of questions asked and answered, and 4 years of running the best damned quiz in the city! What can I say more than that I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m thrilled to still be up on stage bringing the mental challenge that you’ve all come to expect from the Lush Pub Quiz. More than 200 quizzes, more than 1000 rounds, more than 10,000 questions and so many amazing teams, players, guest rounds, and memories and experiences to remember! All I can say from here on out, is that you ain’t seen nothing yet! We’re going 4 more, and if we can, 40 more! Although, I highly doubt the students of 2050 are gonna want a 70 year old dude quizzing them on pop culture, if I could get away with it, I would for sure! Thanks to everyone over the years who has come out week after week, supported us, answered questions, guest hosted, played the Vanna White role, or just sat in the corner and got hammered while other people were hard at work answering questions so you could drink your free booze! From what I remember, we had one hell of an awesome night on Wednesday night and I can’t wait to do it all again next week! See ya guys then!
