Lush Rush Day 2
(Courtesy of Kate Thomson) Power Hour definitely has that name for a reason. It can take a lot of willpower to get through 60 shots of beer in 60 minutes. But a lot of people did it yesterday and some even continued to complete the Centurion and winning not only fame, but also a kick-ass Pyro Cap to show for it.
The official Power Hour honor list goes as follows: Mitchell, Jake, Alex, Alex, Carrie, Alejandro, Maria, Marie, Tord, Peder, Dan, Maria, Amanda, Sven, Bryan, Greg, Josh and Kate Thomsen. Now, if your name is spelled wrong, well that’s your own fault too. Either you didn’t participate (which was a big mistake) or you forgot to sign your name (perhaps to drunk to remember?).
An impressive 8 people managed to get through the Centurion, and yes you had to complete the power hour in order to qualify for the next step. Congratulations to: Alex, Sherr, Peter, Sven, Bryan, Mitchell, Jake and Josh.
If you didn’t complete either, that’s okay. Consider it practice for the next time. Just like our fantastic DJ Juan, who gave up when he had reached an impressive 51!
All in all, a fun night with both Power Hour, Centurion and Beer Pong- and of course lots of people making the statement that just because it is Tuesday it doesn’t mean that you can’t party like a Friday.

Winners – Kidneys Come and Go and Southbound battled it out in a girl vs girl Tsingdao chugging contest, with Kidneys coming out on top. And newcomers Gu’s Army topped out the competition to secure a solid 3rd place.
Sample Question – (Communism) On July 14, 1956, Mao Zedong had the following to say about a certain country in the world. Which country was he referring to? “In appearance it is very powerful but in reality it is nothing to be afraid of; it is a paper tiger. Outwardly a tiger, it is made of paper, unable to withstand the wind and the rain. I believe “this country” is nothing but a paper tiger.”
Last Week’s Answer – (May 19th Recap) Pierre de Fermat, Sir Andrew John Wiles
Lots of new teams, new faces, and new energy in the room, which made for one hell of a good quiz. Hope to see you all back again next week and moreover, I hope some of you get up on stage for a guest round and show me what you’ve got! Oh, and next week, we gotta get more of you down to Pyro for some post- pub quiz dancing. Too much fun to be had on 5rmb tequila shots and cheap pitchers to be missed out on! Make it happen ninjas, and can’t wait to see you all again next week!

Categories – Puzzles, Rich’s Geek round, Ditloids/Cryptograms, Adam’s Booze round, and mashup music!
Winners – Wudaokock cleaned the clocks of all the other teams in what was the closest set of scores in Pub Quiz history! Following close behind to finish in second, Tongzhimen edges out Southbound Pachyderm by just half a point, and would there have been a prize for fourth, 668 – Neighbor of the Beast was just half a point behind Southbound.
Sample Question – (Puzzles) Which mathematician’s final theorem in 1637 stated that no three positive integers, a, b, and c, can satisfy the equation an + bn = cn, where n equals any integer with a value greater than 2 – a theorem that was left unproven for more than 350 years? Bonus: Who was the British mathematician who finally proved the theorem in 1995?
Last Week’s Answer – Sadie Frost
Leaderboard – Even with their third place position this week, Southbound Pachyderm had more than enough points to seal the win for the 10 week leaderboard. Tongzhimen knew Pink on the Brink were hot on their heels, so they brought their A-game and locked in second place, and Pink on the Brink sealed 3rd place with a confident point lead over Kidneys Come and Go to round out the top 4 positions. All in all, an excellent leaderboard showing for all teams involved, and it just goes to show that through perseverance and determination, anyone can top the standings! Stick around and keep your eyes on the prize. The next major leaderboard will be this fall, but we may do a small run for the Summer semester if everyone seems keen.
So 4 years of pub quizzes, 4 years of Thursday hangovers, 4 years of questions asked and answered, and 4 years of running the best damned quiz in the city! What can I say more than that I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m thrilled to still be up on stage bringing the mental challenge that you’ve all come to expect from the Lush Pub Quiz. More than 200 quizzes, more than 1000 rounds, more than 10,000 questions and so many amazing teams, players, guest rounds, and memories and experiences to remember! All I can say from here on out, is that you ain’t seen nothing yet! We’re going 4 more, and if we can, 40 more! Although, I highly doubt the students of 2050 are gonna want a 70 year old dude quizzing them on pop culture, if I could get away with it, I would for sure! Thanks to everyone over the years who has come out week after week, supported us, answered questions, guest hosted, played the Vanna White role, or just sat in the corner and got hammered while other people were hard at work answering questions so you could drink your free booze! From what I remember, we had one hell of an awesome night on Wednesday night and I can’t wait to do it all again next week! See ya guys then!

Categories – Beatles Connections, Opening Lines (Lit), Claus’s Geography round, Robots, and music of course,
Winners – Southbound proves once again what a force they can be by sealing first place with a commanding lead. Pink on the Brink brings the pain as well with a solid showing in second, and Kidneys Come and Go hold on strong with third place.
Sample Question – (Beatles Connections) Who’s the English actress and fashion designer who was married to Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp, and later to Jude Law, with whom she had 3 children?
Last Week’s Answer – September 16th
Leaderboard –With their first place win this week, Southbound Pachyderm sealed the win for the leaderboard this year. Coming second, Tongzhimen is still holding on, but Pink on the Brink is right at their heels and they smell blood. 1 point separates second and third, so it really still is anybody’s game as we approach the final week of the leaderboard next week on the 4th birthday of the Lush Pub Quiz.
Its almost a guarantee that someone will inevitably say, “OMG, I’m never drinking again.” And then 2 days later is knee deep in a river of Tequila, holding onto their limes for dear life, like some citrus flavored life preserver. I’ve done it, you’ve done it, its part of the fabric of Beijing life. This Wednesday certainly didn’t fail to inspire those emotions and actions in more than a few of us. Whether you were celebrating the night’s win, a new job, or just really, really love punching your liver when it’s not looking, Wednesday was again that kind of night. “What would you like to drink?” Let’s go with 5 flaming Dr. Peppers for a start. Yeah, that was a great idea. Anyhow, fueled by Juan’s awesome beats, Pyro’s awesome service staff, and a keen desire to keep the night going as long as possible, we powered through in yet another unforgettable night.

Categories – Cinco de Mayo, Heroes, John’s Movie Songs round, Friends vs. Seinfeld, and Latin Music
Winners – Tongzhimen, man up from their previous losses to take first place for the first time in more than 6 weeks. Pink on the Brink takes second in a 1 point victory over Southbound and Quiz in my Pants, and in yet another epic drink-off, Southbound Pachyderm seals third place while Quiz in my Pants goes home to learn that secret technique to drinking a bottle of Tsingdao just a couple seconds faster.
Sample Question – (Cinco de Mayo) A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. Its not of course, so when is Mexico’s actual Independence Day?
Last Week’s Answer – A Hard Days Night of the Living Dead
Leaderboard –Tongzhimen were apparently tired of their chain of disappointing performances and brought back the vengeance, but still trails Southbound for first place. On the other hand, with a run of successful placements, Pink on the Brink now only trails Tongzhimen by 3 points, and Southbound by 7, so with the leaderboard quickly coming to a close, its still anybody’s game.
Five cheers for Cinco de Mayo, and 5 shots of tequila to boot! I’m not gonna lie, I got in, took a shot to kick the night off, did the quiz, headed to Pyro, and proceeded to drive full speed until I hit 88mph, waking up the next morning with a couple of inexplicable hot dog wrappers next to my computer and a half-consumed glass of vitamin-infused water by the bed. Yeah, we’re Awesome. From the stories I heard over the next couple days, I made the right choice when I heard Shredder’s voice in my head say, “Ninja, Vanish!” and promptly walked right out of the bar and stumbled home. So the Mexican version of St. Patty’s Day was definitely one to be remembered (however many brownouts you may have experienced…)
