The quiz that will always be remembered as Kate’s last quiz. Which for those of you that weren’t there means that it included a lot of alcohol and shots in a communal attempt to get Kate drunk and experience her first hangover. Drunk yea sort of, hangover – still didn’t happen. Better luck another time….
But back to the quiz. Andrea was as always in charge and she did the 4 trivia rounds, but let Kevin do the music round. For trivia rounds we had ‘Current events’, ‘Name the film that famous co-stars didn’t get on off-screen’, ‘Quotes by famous world leaders’ and ‘Famous Kate’s’. Music was a lovely mish-mash of songs we all know and like to sing along to!

Winners: So we had a bit of a controversy due to ‘We come from behind’ exceeding the 8 people on a team limit so despite them having 49 points and ‘Spoiler’ ‘only’ 46, we decided to make it a drink off between the 2 teams to find the winner. However, ‘We come from behind’ were the fastest drinkers so they still got the bottle of Jameson. 3rd place also had to be decided via a drink off. ‘Cunning Stunts’ vs. ‘The Trump Card’. ‘Cunning Stunts’ managed to win that one.

Leaderboard: 6 weeks into the leaderboard and ‘We come from behind’ have given themselves a bit of a lead, but with 4 weeks to go anything is still possible.

And on a final note, please people remember there is a team limit! 8 people on a team max. And that include the ‘oh they aren’t playing, they are just here’ people. Because you never know, they might give you that one answer that gets you the win. Impossible for us to keep track if people are saying things quiz related or not. And we don’t want to be policemen all the time, we like to have fun with you.

As always when Lush Rush hits, things get turned up! And that definitely includes the party-factor – the music round and especially the after-party in Sugar Shack proved that.
Before we got so far though, there were 4 trivia rounds to get through. Andrea had decided to be nice this week (being Rush week and all), so no current events (not sure if that was nice or not, since you all prepare for that) and rounds were in general a little easier than usual. Round 1 was a straight up General Knowledge round getting most teams of to a terrific start. Josh jumped in for round 2 and picture round, celebrities with resting bitch faces! Another round with lots of points for everyone. Round 3 was a little harder, but not much. Netflix description of their tv-shows. The final trivia round was for all of you who like words and languages – ‘English’ words stolen from other languages. Going into the music round we had a 4-way tie, so tension was high! For the music round, it was dancing time! Music from the 00’s – songs we all know and love/hate, but all like to dance to!

Winners: 4-way tie before music round + music we all know = DRINK OFF!! A 2-way drink off for 1st and 2nd place and a 3-way drink off for 3rd place!! ‘We come from behind’ and ‘The Trump Card’ battled for the bottle of Jameson, with ‘We come from behind’ being victorious for the 4th week in a row. The 3-way drink off was between ‘That’s what Xi said’, ‘Cunning Stunts’ and ‘Just visiting’. The visitors showed they know how to down a beer – and they received more beer for the effort!

Quiz itself was over, but as always there was the matter of the 6 tequila shots. However, before we could get that far we had some prizes from our Lush Rush sponsor CHEERS WINES to give out. They had generously donated 7 vouchers each worth a bottle of bubble. So quiz mistress Andrea, quiz master Josh and run-around-get-people-drunk-girl Kate asked a series of questions until all the vouchers were gone.
And then it was time for the crowd tequila questions!!

As the questions died down and the tequila was handed out, the party moved to Sugar Shack, where a good amount of beer pong was already under way. The evening disappeared in beer, tequila and shirtless pong games!!

With Andrea being home in bed sick, Kate took over as quiz mistress for a night. And that definitely made things a little different. We still had a ‘current events’ round, but without any political questions and instead Kate included a couple of sports questions. After that it was time for Kate’s specialty rounds – and no we are not talking about fantasy for once, but randomly fun facts. It’s one of those rounds, where scores stay really low, but you learn a bunch of strange things. You know, the things that you might need at a pub quiz. For example, did you know that a group of pandas is called an embarrassment? Or that philematology is the science of kissing? After that we moved back to more normal trivia rounds, with a comic round. Specifically DC and Marvel. There are so many characters that are basically copies of each other – in most instances the DC character came first, but often the Marvel character was better developed. You received at description of the character (very basic description) and you got half a point per character. Round number 4 was paying tribute to Women’s Day with a connections round consisting all of ‘Best Actress’ Academy winners. For the music round we had the pleasure of Steven doing an awesome 90’s / early 2000′ round. Seemed like you all know the songs, the way you were singing out loud and cheering! Fun times!

Winners: Despite their team name ‘We come from behind’ they started out in the lead and they finished in front as well with 40,5 points! Second place went to the boys thinking they were clever and naming their team ‘Kate’s big hickies’; clever enough that they won second place (36,5 points), but not funny enough for Kate to give them the epic cocktail for best team name. That went to the 2 girls and 1 guy who named themselves ‘Boyz 4 now’. Third place takers were only 1 point behind second place, but in the end ‘International Women’s Bae’ had to settle for the bucket of Tsingtao.

Next week is Lush Rush and that marks the beginning of the leaderboard! So think of a good team name that you can handle responding to for the next 10 weeks!!

March has arrived and so we welcome new students to our fair part of the city! This also means you should remember to show up early for quiz, otherwise it will be hard to get a table – especially when you have big groups! I shall of course always do my best to find a place for you to sit, but if yesterday is any indicator come to Lush before 7pm if you want to have any options at all regarding where you sit.

That new semester has started (or is about to start) was clear for the amount of teams we had present yesterday – 15 teams! Team names were all over the place, with simple names like ‘ birthday boy’ and ‘bing shui’ to more thought about names ”Crew’daokou’ and ‘WudaoKrew’. Of course we also had a political one ‘ Donald Drumph’s Disciples’! But the team name that Andrea liked the best ended up being ‘Hulu and Hang’ – as she said ‘A Chinese spin on Netflix and Chill’…

As for the quiz itself, as always, it is necessary to keep track of what happens in the world. If you are one of those that pay attention to all the news, then you will do well in Andrea’s quizzes. Yesterday’s rounds were ‘Current events’, ‘General knowledge’, a picture round where you had to name the movie from a picture of the main character with his dog. Hard to put a theme on the music round, but we had artists as diverse as ‘TLC’, ‘SUM 41’, ‘Rob Zombie’ and ‘Rihanna ft. Drake’.

Winners: As usual, the music round changed things! It’s the one round that constantly provides the biggest change to top 3 teams! Yesterday ’99 problems but a quiche ain’t one’ was in the lead before tying with ‘We come from behind’ as we moved into music round. When the music round was done, ‘We come from behind’ had lived up to their name and won the quiz and the bottle of Jameson with a total of 46 points. ’99 problems but a quiche ain’t one’ scored the epic cocktail with 42 points and ‘Youku and Chill’ was just 1 point behind and grabbed the bucket of Tsingtaos.

Don’t forget, LUSH RUSH is coming up! March 14th-20th! It’s gonna get messy! Stay tuned for more info…

Messy! It’s that time again! The mess that is Lush Rush Week is about to hit Wudaokou once more. It’s the week we all love and fear. Love it, because it is absolutely awesome. Fear it because it is absolute awesome. It’s so much awesomeness that it can be hard to handle. Below is a little run down of the day-to-day activities along with an explanation of the achievement game! Your chance to win awesome prizes! That’s right, it’s not just a party week. We’ve turned it into a competition – a competition without any real losers.

Achievement game: Every event provides you with an opportunity to gain points in the race to become the winner of Lush Rush Week Spring 2015. What does it take to win? The ability to have fun seven days in a row – and perhaps a little luck! With something going on every day, it’s going to require commitment. Commitment to party. What does the winner get, you ask. 1000 rmb bar tab to spend anyway you want at Lush!! Yes, competition will be tough, but don’t despair. Even if you don’t win the tab, you can still get a prize. You just have to get 55 points to win a special Rush Week shirt! That’s worth fighting for, right? I’ll provide you with scorecard along with your first points. Don’t lose your card! If you do, you’ll have to start over. Your card is personal. No combining cards. That would be cheating – and nobody likes a cheater. You will of course be allowed to keep the card afterwards as a souvenir to remind you of the awesome week!

Program and points are as follows:

Monday is the City Weekend kickoff party at Lush. It’s our Martini night, even cheaper than normally. 15 rmb for a martini between 6pm and midnight. To get your points for this event you need to buy a martini during happy hour (8-10pm) and you will have earned your first 5 points. An easy start.

Tuesday at Sugar Shack Pizza will be one of the nights you’ll keep talking about for a long time. It’s WSU’s Power Hour. ONE shot of beer EVERY minute for an HOUR. Easy enough? That’s what they all say. Until they try it that is. We continue with Centurion, same deal but for another 40 minutes. So totally 1 shot every minute for 100 minutes! Good luck. This evening you have the chance to get 20 points.

Wednesday is our legendary Pub Quiz, sponsored by our friends from Plastered 8. Meaning in addition to the normal prizes you can win some of those funny t-shirts. Since competition is bound to be fierce, we give you 5 points just for participation and both 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will earn additional 15 points each.
After making our brain concentrate hard for 2 hours answering Andrea’s questions it’s time to move about a bit, taking the party to Sugar Shack. Don’t want to promise too much, but I would be surprised if beer pong tables wouldn’t be set up for some friendly competition.

Thursday the battle continues at Sugar Shack Pizza with Beer Pong. Again you get 5 points for joining and winners will get 15 points as well as the usual bottle of booze! If the last couple of weeks are any indicators (of course they are) the night will be packed with pong and dancing! Come early to make sure you get to join in the fun!

Friday night Lush comes alive with our houseband The Avengers of Music! This is your chance to party with the superheroes, we got them all. Captain America as lead singer (yes the man apparently can do everything), The Hulk picks up guitar and bass as the big green beast he is while charming us with his voice. Hawkeye shows off his impeccable aim on the drums! Another unexpected guitar-champ is Iron Man, but guess we shouldn’t be surprised. It is Iron Man after all! It takes a special kind of woman to keep these boys in line, which is why we have Black Widow on the saxophone! The heroes takes the stage 9.30pm

Saturday is the day to show off your dance moves. In co-operation with the Latin Community at BeiDa we are throwing a Latin party that will blow your mind. In addition to DJ Manu playing some great tunes and a packed dance floor we have some sick specials for you. 5rmb shots (tequila, whiskey, vodka), 10rmb mixed drinks, 20rmb Corona! Show up to the party and you will have earned yourself 10 achievement points.

Sunday It’s time for Open Mic. Get on stage and get those final points, one performance will get you 15 points! It’s the perfect way to calm down after battling all week. Who am I kidding? Calm down? We party on!

In addition to the points mentioned above you can get 5 points for somehow managing to get yourself one of the classic black I (heart) Wu wristbands. And wearing it! And don’t forget to grab/steal one of the red wristbands made specifically for this Lush Rush!

IT’S GONNA GET MESSY!!!

Lush Pub QuizGood to see you all made it through the New Year parties – Andrea as well! She was back for her first quiz in three weeks and she was ready to jump around various areas. We got movies, religion, fruits/vegetables as well as music from her and a guest round from Josh!

The first round of the night was the entertainment round; this week it was movies where the main character dies. You had to guess the movie simply from the description of how the character died, getting around movies such as American Beauty, Alien 3, Gladiator and The Departed. To change things up from the usual routine, second round was picture round this week. And it was time to see how well you know your (more exotic) fruits/vegetables – as Andrea put it “I didn’t know a bunch of these before coming to China”. We are talking lychee, dragon fruit, durian, cherimoya etc.

Going into round 3, Josh took the stage with his ‘famous firsts’ round, which most teams seemed to take a liking to (or at least know something about). Next up was the religion round! It covered answers as vast as Yom Kippur, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Rastafari and the Land of Nod. Music round was meant to get you dancing, and if you didn’t dance at least you were rocking along in your seats. The songs were all songs that were hitting in the first week of 2015, so pretty recent 

Winners: 8 teams present and it was a pretty close race who would win the bottle. In the end “The Quizzie Lizard” edged out “70 years with the same Bush” by a single point. Third place went to ‘Finnish me Aus” with 38 points!

pubconnectMay 14th saw another absence of Kate from Beijing with her long due return to the happy land of Denmark. But the quiz must go on!

Mate and Megan offered their assistance with two excellent quiz rounds; one of general knowledge, with questions such as “What is the well known Malay word for ‘person of the forest’? Answer: Orangutan and “Which European country depicts cows on its flag?” Answer: Andorra. The other round being a geographical picture round of famous monuments including the mysterious heads from Easter Island, and the mermaid statue from Hans Christian Andersen’s [and Kate’s] homeland of Denmark.

The opening round involved naming the movie to which famous taglines belonged, such as “Don’t go into the water!”, “One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero!” “Trust a few. Fear the rest”. Then there was a round on events from the “noughties” or 2000-2009 for those who aren’t used to British slang. Questions included “Michael Jackson died on June 25th 2009, how old was he?” “Which iconic gadget was released on November 10th 2001? Finally the music round was voted on from the participating teams as I couldn’t decide which one I liked more…the chosen round was to name the artist/group/characters performing songs linked to famous movies. Points were awarded for knowing the artist and half points for the accompanying film. Hit included, ofcourse, Celine Dion’s ‘My heart will go on” from ‘Titanic’ but also quirky songs like The Moldy Peaches’ ‘Anyone else but you’ from ‘Juno’.

In the end, Game of Cards, House of Thrones and Scooby Snacks snatched first place and the bottle of Jameson followed by THINKIN’ CAPS enjoying an epic cocktail, and, following a three-way drink off for third place, saw Esos son Reebok o son Nike? Secure the bucket of Tsingtaos.

Quizillionaire

What does ‘Dips’, ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lego’ have in common? This week’s quiz! They are all rounds that were done by Andrea. As everybody were finishing up their dinners quiz started with a round on ‘common dips’. She provided the ingredients for the most common version of a specific dip, and you just had to write down what dip she was referring to. From deliciousness we moved on to ‘obvious answers’ – turned out they weren’t that obvious. Yes, I guess you figured that one out right away, duh! In honor of May the 4th, round number three was dedicated to Star Wars! We are all nerds of some kind after all. Round number 4 was a picture round of Lego’s version of historical people. There was some disagreement over the color of Alexander the Great’s hair, which to me just proves you guys are way too knowledgeable if you want to base arguments regarding a Lego figure on the hair color. But Awesome!!

Sample question: The next number in the sequence would be 63 – double the last number plus 1. Okay, new question time: What is the common dip made from these ingredients: Cucumber, olive oil, yogurt, garlic, dill, lemon juice and salt?? And a question from the obvious round: What is a titmouse?

Winners: No drink off this week, “FYM: Flatulent Yeti Monsters” scored 49 points which was enough for them to get the bottle of Jameson. “Game of cards, house of thrones and Scooby Snacks” got to enjoy an EPIC Adios for their 43 points. And the bucket of beers went to “Megan’s big naturals: Hangin’ High and Proud” with 41 points.

Leaderboard: With three weeks left of the leaderboard “Game of cards, House of Thrones” has made a run for it. They currently have 53 points. “FYM” is in second place with 45 points. And “Megan’s big naturals” is pretty safe in 3rd place with 39 points.

Quiz Show

Quiz this week was different…there was an alarming lack of Kate’s dancing and drinking and Josh’s dulcet Vegas drawl.

Instead Andrea, with assistance of the beautiful Zach’s banter and mathematical know-how, took the quiz of 09/04/2014.

As always, the hardcore committed regulars were there, with some new team additions in the crowd, a new French team, AllonsEnfants, and The Nuggets.

This week was certainly one of the most challenging mid-semester quizzes. The opening round on “Famous disappearances’ really tested world history knowledge, and made some teams realize they need make friends from outside of America to know all the answers.

Megan’s ‘Serial Killers’ round tested our teams to the max, but made us feel secure in each other’s presence since no one clearly admires the work of John Wayne Gacy. A good way to know you are safe in your teammates company, and its OK for them to crash on your couch when pissed.

The new young French team were clearly a happy bunch, and not into sad disappearances of killing, so were struggling to get into double figures on the points board, but they did get into double figures on 2 racks of tequila to help stimulate those brain cells.

Martin’s Sports Round proved popular amongst American sports nuts in the audience, and saw some of our top scoring teams pull away from the crowd on the leader board.

The fourth round tested both current film knowledge as well as classical novel and playwright knowledge. However, I don’t know if we will feel any more cultured realizing Bridget Jones’ dilemmas are really a modern rendition of Elizabeth Bennett’s detest of MrDarcey.

By the end of the fourth round, we were only at 9:15pm, so the bold decision was taken to ask the audience if they wanted an extra round, especially due to the challenging nature of the earlier quiz rounds. Only “Game of Cards, House of Thrones” voted against a sixth round…wanting to maintain their lead. However, majority rules, and “What World Leader am I talking about?” was thrown into the mix. Questions like, “Who was the first American President to be interviewed by a female journalist…and he was naked at the time?” tested how well we know the quirks of our world leaders.

Finally the music round was a mix of current pop bands, 90’s grunge, Britpop, Rock and allowed some teams to edge a top 3 lead.

The final three dominating teams were:
1. Game of Cards, House of Thrones
2. Former Yugoslavian Mafia
3. Megan’s Big Naturals: The Quest for the Holy Grail

Following this, were plenty of audience questions, with 2 racks of tequila being called for, and Robin being vetoed on some of his answers, as he just knows too much.

The Lush crowd as always are super fantastic, providing great support for all guest hosts, showing that Lush is everyone’s home from home…and that Sugar Shack is the drunken home from home to stroll to afterwards.

– Andrea
