QuizillionaireThis week’s Pub Quiz was the last week for the leaderboard, making it a very interesting night! In addition there was not one, but two guest rounds! Annaliese hosted “Books to Movies”, and Will hosted “History”. Even without Kate running around passing out Tequila shots, it was a great night for Pub Quiz. In between one round we even gave away three tickets to the Beijinger Awards Party! After Pub Quiz, Josh kept the night alive with our new post quiz random trivia, in other words, the chance to win free shots.

Sample Questions:We all know Dr. Suess, but what was his real name? Theodore Geisel, who would have guessed? Here’s a joke, how often does Lush tell element jokes, periodically! Though who created the modern Periodic table of elements as we now know it, with individual elements arranged into groups and periods?Dmitri Mendeleev. Don’t feel bad if those were too hard, we threw some easy questions in the mix too. What was the first state to become so in the United States?

Winners: Kidney’s Come and Go won with an astounding 50 points, followed by Norfolk and Joy, and Hot Tamales I’m Sweating (Woo!). Kidney’s took home the number one spot on the leaderboard. The real battle was between Norfolk and Hot Tamales. Although it was close Norfolk took 2nd, leaving Hot Tamales in 3rd on the leaderboard. It has been a long ten weeks, but through it all we had fun. Join us next week for more Pub Quiz!

Lush Pub QuizA week where I suddenly had to go on stage to host a round, something that doesn’t happen that often. Thankfully. As most of you know I prefer running around chit chatting and handing out tequila shots! The reason I had to get on stage was that Josh wasn’t exactly happy with one of his rounds, so we adapted a round I wrote a couple of years ago but had never done. Before we got to my round though, we had Josh’s “Misguided naming or how racial/ethnic lines are blurred in Hollywood”, a round regarding vegetables, guest round by Annaliese and Miguel in honor of Cinco de Mayo! Difficult, but interesting round. Think most people just focus on tequila and coronas when they think about Cinco de Mayo. My round was TV-shows from the 2000s, most of them were only on for a season or two. The music round was another tough guest round, guitar solos.

Sample questions: The name of Ted’s band in Scrubs is The Worthless Peons! How many of you knew that? Next one was probably the easiest one I have ever given you, but just in case: The Gestapo was from Germany! From this week, there will naturally be from the Cinco de Mayo round: Cinco de Mayo is a holiday all about tequila, so what are the three most traditional types of tequila? On to vegetables, if a dish is cooked a la Florentine, what vegetable should you expect it to include?

Winners: While Kidney’s come and go have almost secured first place on the leaderboard, it’s a tough game for 2nd and Hot Tamales I’m sweatin’ are not giving up. This week they scored 38 points, enough for 1st place and crawled back up on the leaderboard. Second place went to Wembley Calling with 36 points. And Norfolk and Matt fought and got 3rd! With two weeks left of the leaderboard, it’s gonna be close!

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO

Are you Smarter12 teams competing, a team with a name that Josh found slightly gross (who farted in my mouth?), no drink off, but plenty of drinks. Once again it was back to everybody’s favorite decade, the 90’s! First round was pure nostalgia, theme songs from the (great) TV-show we all deny watching back in the day (Beverly Hills 90210, E.R., X-files, Dawson’s Creek to name a few). We continued in the world of TV with a guest round from Will, half American shows and half British shows. Some questions were definitely hard on the American crowd, to the pleasure of all non-Americans. Third round took us to a completely different place. Geography. More or less a straight up country knowledge round, however, you needed to know where the different secret police/freedom fighters etc belong. Korey returned to the stage for a “Films of 1999” round, so many awesome films that year. For the music round, Josh had picked some pretty amazing artists – we got to listen to Metallica, AC/DC, Linkin Park, Muse and Foo Fighters.

Sample question: The person who has been nominated for an Academy Award the most times is Walt Disney. Not really that surprising when you think of it right? The pet that got boiled by crazy Glen Close in Fatal Attraction was a rabbit! First question from this week, might be easy, might be hard: In Scrubs, what is the name of Ted’s band? And just in case that one was too hard (which it seemed to be for most people), next one should be really easy: Which country was home to the Secret State Police, under the administration of the country’s Protection Squadron, known famously as the Gestapo?

Winners: Norfolk and Adam are refusing to give up their spot on the leaderboard, and after a not-top placement last week, they were back with a vengeance. 56 points and 7 points in the leaderboard race. Kidney’s were also giving it all, they scored a solid 54 points securing them 2nd place. Third place went to ‘3peat All Up in Yo’Grill’. With only 3 weeks left of leaderboard now is the time to get rush for those points!

This was the last week with Figting Cock as the grand prize, from next week we are giving out a bottle of Jameson!! Hope you don’t mind the change!

Quizillionaire“The quiz that started on time”. Almost on time, there were some issues with the picture round that needed to be dealt with, but apart from that. Problem got fixed and Josh was ready to rock the quiz as usual. This week we had 2 guest rounds, Korey’s crazy love and Adrienne’s super nerdy cartoon round. The previously mentioned troublesome picture round was characters from video games, and then we had a round called “Mosts”. Music round was a mix of songs from the last 5-10 years. The guest rounds were probably the most exciting ones of the evening – sorry Josh. Crazy love covered a lot of weirdoes, starting with Van Gogh and the prostitute that received his cut off ear. Then we went through astronauts, an erotic thriller, various movies and of course the Oedipus Complex. The super nerdy cartoon round was indeed very nerdy, with the worst/best one of them all being “The video game characters Mario and Donkey Kong have their origins in a 1981 arcade game, also named Donkey Kong. But Nintendo only created them after failing to get the license to use characters from an existing cartoon. Which one?” Boom! Not sure if anybody actually got that one, but it was Popeye!
When quiz was over, Josh was in the mood to give out a lot of free alcohol! So we did perhaps 20 random questions, some more nerdy than others. And I do apologize for my very nerdy Lord of the Rings questions, but in my defense several people claimed to be LoTR nerds like me. Lesson learned.

Sample questions: The medical term stemming from the French verb is Triage. And the (lovely) teletubbies are of course: Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po. From this week, I’ll give you one of the bonus questions from Josh’s Mosts round: With 60 nominations and 22 wins, who was the most nominated and winningest person in Academy Award history? Moving on to crazy love, in the 1987 film Fatal Attraction, Glen Close’s character (Alexandra) does some crazy things to win the affection of Dan, played by Michael Douglas. However one of the most notable scenes from that movie was when she boils Dan’s daughter’s pet. What animal was that pet?

Winners: 48 points for both Hot Tamales I’m sweatin’ and The Undiagnostable Rash resulting in Paul and Zach taking the stage for the drink off. After a double drink off, due to arguments over foam, Hot Tamales I’m sweatin’ claimed the bottle of Fighting Cock. The Undiagnostable Rash decided to get the epic Singapore Sling for their efforts. Kidney’s come and go were only 1 point behind the others, but it was enough to leave them in 3rd place.

jeopardy pub quizAs part of the massive 10 year anniversary celebrations, we threw some extra specials your way this Wednesday. As we will on the 10th of every month! 10 years, wow, it’s an important milestone and we really hope you guys will continue to help us celebrate! Stay alert, you never know when we throw in a flashback event. The only thing you can know for sure that May 10th is a Friday and it’s gonna get messy.

Back to the quiz, Josh was having some problems with his best friend, Apple, so Korey had to quickly put together a music round. Nicely done with samples, so for once listening to the voice couldn’t help you. You needed the original artist.
The four rounds Josh did do were: Four the win, On Trial, Medical Exam and an illustrated movie picture round! “Four the win” took us through the Fab Four, Little women, the noble truths, teletubbies as well as mitosis. “On Trial” pretty much explains itself, but Josh still managed to get a good variety of trials covered. We had murder cases, the Black Sox Scandal, Socrates and Boston Legal! “Medical Exam” was probably the hardest round of the week. Or was I the only one to think so? I’ll give you a sample question from this round later, so judge for yourself. The picture round was simple enough as far as naming the movie. But here’s the twist. You didn’t get any points for the movie itself, but if you didn’t get the right movie, then you couldn’t get any points. The point awarding questions were the characters and actors that you see in the illustration.

Sample questions: The children’s stories about Snipp, Snapp and Snurre were from Sweden! Hope you all got that one. The musician turned politician was Sonny Bono! Promised you a question from the medical round, so let’s start with that one, and yes it will be one of the hard ones. What medical emergency term stems from the French verb meaning ‘to separate’? To not leave you all frustrated, I’ll give you an easy question from the Four the win round. Name the four teletubbies!

Winners: Two weeks, two wins continue with their confidence and so far they have every right to do so. They took their second win with 49 points. That was 6 points more than 2nd place, Fister Act 2. It was much closer for 3rd place. Norfolk and Idea beat Kidney’s by just half a point! We are halfway through the leaderboard. Now is the time to step up, so your team can enjoy some of those awesome prizes we’ll give out in the end.

10! 10! 10!

Quiz ShowThe room was packed, we had 19 teams present. Everybody really wanted to prove themselves smarter than the other team – or maybe just maybe they wanted that bottle of alcohol. Not entirely sure, I know all I would want is the honor of…. Nah I can’t even type it with a straight face. I would play for the alcohol! Anyway, back to the rounds. We were going to have a guest round by Adrienne, but she was unable to make it. So Will did his magic trick and re-created a Space round from memory! A really nerdy round that made people go: oooooh! But most teams didn’t do that bad. For the four rounds by Josh, we had some literature, some recent history, a picture round and 80’s music! Before you all freak out about literature, calm down, it was all books about or for children. Okay, now you can freak out. The literature we have forgotten all the details in. Recent history, that pretty much explains itself although not sure everything Josh asked should be categorized as RECENT! The picture round was secret agents from TV-shows or movies. If you didn’t know the show/movie you wouldn’t get anything, but if you had the right show and knew the actor and character you had the chance to get lots of points. With 80’s music nothing could stop the dancing! Which continued at Pyro – both the dancing and the 80’s songs! Awesome awesome night.

Sample questions: For the sport nerds out there the Muhammed Alis fights shouldn’t have posed a problem. For the rest, “The Thrilla in Manila” was against Joe Frazier and “The Rumble in the Jungle” was George Foremann. The answer to the perhaps tougher question regarding Saturnalia is: The masters would serve the slaves! From this week’s quiz we are going back to childhood literature. Taj Lindman wrote children’s stories about Snipp, Snapp and Snurr, three boys who had adventures, and also Flicka, Ricka and Dicka, three girls who also had fun children’s adventures. The boys and girls were all distinctly from a certain European country, which one? And yes, those are their names. To pick the next sample question I had a little help from Alex Brown from Hot Tamales I’m sweatin’. He chose the following: Which famous musician turned to politics in 1995 and got himself elected to US Congress when he was upset over his inability to open a restaurant in Palm Springs, CA. He unfortunately passed away a few years later in a skiing accident?

Winners: By choosing the name “In for a week, in for a win” the guys really put pressure on themselves. The question was if they could live up to it. The answer was yes! They put on a good show and got 50,5 points! Kidney’s – with their slightly modified name (Kidney’s come and go, but fingers don’t) due to Ben’s little accident last week – were strong competition none the less and won 2nd place by scoring 48 points. Third place went to Turtles in Time! Not sure what that refers to, but they got beers for their 43.5 points. Well done everybody!!!

DON’T FORGET NEXT WEEK IS APRIL 10TH AND WE ARE DOING EXTRA SPECIALS IN HONOR OF LUSH’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY!!!!!

pubconnectIt’s been a week, but here is the update. On this great night, we had not one, but two awesome guest rounds. We had an International Sports Round and Myths and Legends. For the other two normal trivia rounds Josh had duck up some Entertainment Potpourri and a round he called “Three’s a crowd”! It was definitely a week where it was good to someone on your team that knew a little about everything. Or if you had picked your team members with such care that you had one person to cover each topic, because with the questions that came up, there was no way you could definitely know all the answers. And if you did, then you are way smarter than anyone should be allowed to be. Just kidding. Perhaps.

Sample questions: Okay, let’s get your Tom Hanks knowledge out of the way first. He won back to back Oscars for: Philadelphia and Forrest Gump! Yep, he was nominated for but didn’t win for Saving Private Ryan. All of you gamers out there should have gotten the Mortal Kombat one – and if you have never played the game, get started. The phrase if of course: FINISH HIM (or her depending on the opponent). So hard to pick questions from this night, I personally found a lot of good ones. Ah, one from each guest round. International Sport: Out of Muhammad Alis fights maybe two are the most famous ones: “The Thrilla in Manila” and “Rumble in the Jungle”. Name the two opponents (and match the opponent with the right fight). Next question: During the Roman festival of Saturnalia, dedicated to the god Saturn which normal roles were reversed, most notably at meals?

Winners: The battle for booze is intense, and this was a very tough week. The average score was over 10 points lower than the week before. Hot Tamales I’m sweatin’ ended up with the bottle of Fighting Cock by scoring 39 points, right behind them with 38 points were Kidney’s come and go. Norfolk and Hope proved themselves as well and got a bucket of beer to show for it.

Photo CollageIt’s that time again! Lush Rush – Spring Edition! Everything is just better in the spring, the days are longer which make people stay out longer, the temperatures are rising causing everybody to wear less clothes. It’s just a fantastic time of the year! The program we have lined up for you for the upcoming week is pretty awesome if I may say so myself. This will be my 8th Lush Rush and I am still super excited about it!

Achievement game: Every event provides you with an opportunity to gain points in the race to become the winner of Lush Rush Week Fall 2012. What does it take to win? Party skills! With something going on every day, it’s going to require commitment. Commitment to party. What does the winner get, you ask. 1000 rmb bar tab to spend anyway you want at Lush!! Yes, competition will be tough, but don’t despair. Even if you don’t win the tab, you can still get a prize. One of the famous I (heart) WU T-shirts will be yours if you just get 55 points or above. That’s worth fighting for, right? I’ll provide you with scorecard along with your first points. Don’t lose your card! If you do, you’ll have to start over. Your card is personal. No combining cards. That would be cheating – and nobody likes a cheater .

Program and points are as follows:

Monday is the City Weekend kickoff party at Lush. It’s our Martini night, even cheaper than normally. 15 rmb for a martini between 6pm and midnight. To get your points for this event you need to buy a martini during happy hour (8-10pm) and you have earned your first 5 points.

Tuesday at Pyro will be one of the nights you’ll keep talking about for a long time. It’s SNAP Adventures’ Power Hour. ONE shot of beer EVERY minute for an HOUR. Easy enough? That’s what they all say. Until they try it that is. We continue with Centurion, same deal but for another 40 minutes. So totally 1 shot every minute for 100 minutes! Good luck. This evening you have the chance to get 20 points.

Wednesday is our legendary Pub Quiz, yet again sponsored by Plastered 8. Meaning in addition to the normal prizes you can win some of those funny t-shirts. Last time people were so excited to get one, that shirts were flying around the room! You had to have been there. Since competition is bound to be fierce, we give you 5 points just for participation and both 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will earn additional 15 points each. After sitting down for the whole quiz, I think it’s fair to say we need to stretch those legs. DJ Juan will be playing at Pyro and I for one will be on the dancefloor. Hope some of you are joining me so I don’t look too silly out there.

Thursday is the only night with something happening at both Lush and Pyro. At Lush there will be delicious home brewed beer from Great Leap Brewery and discounted prices on our normal imported beer. At Pyro, the battle continues with Beer Pong. Again you get 5 points for joining and winners will get 15 points. No extra points for 2nd place, but there will be additional prizes this night. Mashup Sports and Social are official sponsors of Beer Pong this week and will be offering fantastic prizes to both 1st and 2nd place in each bracket! Trust me, it’s worth winning!

Friday night Lush comes alive with Tavey Lean and the Solid Gold Dream Machine on stage. These guys will make sure you start the weekend the right way. Come in early to make sure you and your friends can get a table! And of course, be ready to dance!

Saturday we celebrate my birthday the only way we know how! With an over the top crazy 555 party! That’s right. You will get 5rmb draft beer, 5rmb shots (whiskey, vodka or of course my favorite shot: tequila) and 5rmb mixed drinks! If that isn’t enough to get you to come make this a birthday I’ll remember, then Korey’s music should be! DJ Korey is prepped and ready to get you all moving on the dance floor!

Sunday ST. PATRICK’S DAY! What better way to round up this Lush Rush? 15rmb Guinness all day long! As well as Lucky Jello Shots! All of that in combination with our great Open Mic! Get on stage and get those final points, one performance will get you 15 points! It’s the perfect way to come down after battling all week. Who am I kidding? Calm down? We party on! Yen has provided us with some tickets for their White Party, and we are giving you the chance to win them during Open Mic! No, you don’t have to sign. This will be something else.

In addition to the points mentioned above you can get 5 points for somehow managing to get yourself one of the classic black I (heart) Wu wristbands. And wearing it! There is also 10 points if you can figure out the secret of Lush Rush. And don’t forget to grab/steal one of the orange wristbands made specifically for this Lush Rush!

Are you SmarterNerds, Geeks, whatever you choose to call us, we are awesome! We even have our own reality show now, King of the Nerds! Isn’t that all it takes to be cool?
Lots and lots of knowledge about cool stuff. What’s cool stuff? Well, that depends on who you ask. Anybody and everybody is a nerd/geek about something. We started out with a science/philosophy round, where you had to define various scientific/philosophical principals, then a picture round with different internet memes that had to identified. Round 3 was probably the hardest one of the all, and it was a guest round by DJ Korey aka Fresh Prince of Wudaokou: Theme songs from tv-shows. Sounds easy enough right? The catch, all the shows were black tv shows. Despite it being a hard round, it was pretty fun and enjoyable. It was the only guest round of the week, so Josh was back up with a round on fictional geography. The music round was themed around robots! Think we got through a good amount of nerdy topics. I’m sure we’ll get more next week.

Winners: Korey got the honour of picking the best team name of the night and he chose a crowd pleaser – My couch pulls out, but I don’t! It’s a great name, been used before, but not by these guys. They weren’t even here last time it was there. They got an epic AMF as a reward to their name. The quiz itself, after a drink off, was won by Stephen Calabria’s swollen Pendulow Meat Curtains (46 points). Those a little bit too slow at chugging beer was Jessica Vajmurder! And apparently it was one of those nights, because we had a tie for 3rd place as well. “My couch pulls out, but I don’t” were clearly not done drinking after their AMF, they won the drink off and got a round of beer! The sad fourth place went to “In Soviet Russia, stars wish on you”, but to help with the sadness we sent tequila their way.

Sample questions: Last week I asked you who played the good son in the movie “The Good Son”, it was of course Elijah Wood. Martin Bryant went on his shooting spree in Australia! For this week, so many good ones to choose from…. Okay, one from the fictional geography. The series starts and ends on Earth, with most of the action in the first novel taking place in a space station in orbit around Earth, and then later on Eros, an asteroid completely bereft of light. In the rest of the books, the majority of the action takes place on Lusitania, a planet under the threat of annihilation. What’s the name of the first book in that series? And a more scientific one, what is Euclid’s Theory? And just for fun: Rule 34?

Feb 102013

Quizillionaire4 rounds by Josh and 1 by Stephen. No overall theme, but entertainment was the most prominent category. The first round was “Black History Month (in the USA)”,  second was audio clip from a movie or TV-show, third round was from Stephen and just random trivia about anything from Batman over shortest Chinese dynasty to the stars above. The fourth round was a picture round with iconic movie images and music round got us through Paula Abdul, Rage Against the Machine, Counting Crows as well as Skrillex.

Sample questions: And the answers from last are as follows; the material mainly used in women’s stockings were either nylon or rayon (artificial silk). The two American presidents buried in Arlington National Cemetery are: William H. Taft and John F Kennedy. For this week I’ll take a question from Stephen’s round and one from the “Black History Month” round. So, also known as the Dog Star, which star, whose name comes from the Greek word for scorching, qualifies as the brightest star in the night sky? You all know which star that is right? Josh wanted to know, what is the name of Othello’s wife in the Shakespearian play about the Moor of Venice?

Winners: With 10 teams present and some good team names, we went back to give out an Epic Cocktail to the team with the best name. It was a close call between ‘Well Timed Blow Job’ and ‘I swear they’re real’, but in the end I decided to go with ‘I swear they’re real’. Congrats on your great team name! Now the winners of the quiz itself was Constantinoble with 48 points, 1 point behind them we found Kidney’s come and go. And taking third place the team with the second best teamname of the night ‘Well timed Blow Job’ with 42 points. Plenty of alcohol to all.
